A Happiness Jar – Week 11

Writer's picture: AdminAdmin

This has been A WEEK. It always happens that whenever I do one of these cleanses by the third day (in this case, Wednesday) I am an absolute wreck. This week that consisted of me sitting on the kitchen counter crying to Chris that I couldn’t do it anymore. And he was super sweet and talked me out of being a nut and I made some kale chips and we split a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc with our friends who were coming over for dinner. I am pathetic.

It really got me thinking though….what is the true point of me doing these healthy eating weeks/cleanses/detoxes/challenges? I would be lying if I said I didn’t want to lose a few pounds (because who doesn’t), but that’s not the main point of it. I really just want to show myself that I can do it if I have to. That I can go whatever amount of time without drinking alcohol or coffee or eating really anything that’s not good for me. I get really frustrated when I am going through the week and can’t put my finger on the reason for not allowing myself to have a glass of wine or piece of bread when I want it. So I’m not going to do that anymore. If I really want something, I’m going to have it. I’m still going to meal prep each week and set myself up to be healthy and successful, but I’m not going to make myself miserable in the process. And that was a good realization.

With all that being said, here are my five favorite things from the week:

1. Having meals pre-prepped and really not having to think twice about food or cooking all week

As boring as some of my meals were this week and as much as I just wanted to go out and get fries, it was so nice to have everything all pre-done on Sunday and to just grab and go with meals throughout the week. It really does save so much time when I don’t have to think about what Chris and I are going to eat for our meals and snacks. However, I really do like to cook a nice dinner in the middle of the week, as it totally breaks up the work-week and is a nice little surprise.

2. A visit from my friend Hannah at work on Tuesday

Hannah and I have been friends since high school, and she is one of the best people I know. She is so smart and kind and always knows the right thing to say. She also has a precious two year old daughter, and the two of them came to hang out at work with me for a little bit on Tuesday around lunch time. My office is actually out back of a residential property that is huge and technically an old farm, so we walked Brooke around for a while, had coffee, and just talked. She is so good at giving me a different perspective on an otherwise frustrating situation, and I appreciate her so much for that.

3. Grilling dinner and eating outside with our friends on Wednesday

Our friends Ben and Beth live only about a mile away, so on Wednesday night they walked over with their 8-month old for dinner. It was so nice to sit outside with them and eat delicious food that Chris grilled for us. I love summer nights like that – where in the middle of the week you can sit outside on a patio for hours and it totally feels like a weekend night on a Wednesday. Our back porch also has such a cool view of where the sun sets every night, so we tend to be out there most nights watching that anyway.

4. Hanging out with my sister Jenna

Now that all of my sisters are officially home for the whole summer, I am so, so happy. I was working from my parents house on Thursday afternoon taking care of their dog and taking my youngest sister to a dance audition she had, and Jenna got home from school while I was over there. We laid on the couch and watched Keeping Up With the Kardashians and made snow-cones and it was wonderful. I am so lucky that my sisters are some of my best friends, too.

5. The fact that I am getting a FACIAL tonight 😀

A few years ago when I was having a lot of trouble with breakouts on my face, I found a local salon that did acne facials. They totally helped clear up my skin, and in the process I met the most amazing esthetician. She is so knowledgable and good at what she does. She gives the best facials ever (not that I have anything to compare it to) and it is like, the most relaxing/fun hour ever when I go see her. She has also taught me so much about taking care of my skin the right way and has been a huge part in helping me keep it clear the last few years. It’s been way too long since I’ve gone to see her (super expensive), but I’m finally going tonight and am so looking forward to it.

_________

And with that, I am off to get through the rest of this Friday and enjoy my low-key weekend ahead. We really don’t have too much going on – I could get used to this. However, I am really looking forward to going to my sister Olivia’s dance competition. I used to be a competitive dancer and it’s always fun to go see the “little girls” I used to teach being all grown up and great dancers and in high school now. And it’s so fun to be there watching with the girls I used to dance with and the teachers I grew up with.

It’s also supposed to be pretty cold and rainy most of the weekend, so that sounds like a great excuse to me to stay in on Saturday and read and watch Shameless 😉

What are you looking forward to most this weekend?
