Little Surprises

Writer's picture: AdminAdmin

I’m going to be totally honest – I had a terrible day on Tuesday. And I still have a pretty crappy attitude today that I’m trying really hard to get rid of. Wedding planning is so stressful for me. Am I beyond excited to marry Chris and to have a special day centered around us and the love we have for each other? Absolutely! But all these little details leading up to it are a lot to handle for me. And I know, I know. What a complaint. Our parents want to help us host a gorgeous wedding and I am very, very grateful, but it really is a lot to try to coordinate. I always want to please everyone else, so I’ve been forgetting to do what makes me happy, too. Which is where I think the biggest source of stress is coming from.

I was texting Chris Tuesday at work about what a hard day I was having, and I really hit the fiancé jackpot, because he showed up at home after work with all of this:

Beautiful flowers (including a few sunflowers – my favorite), a bottle of rosé, and my two favorite junk foods – hot cheetos and sour skittles. I understand that I have the taste buds of a five year old sometimes. 😉

So that night we made a healthy dinner of roasted salmon, sweet potatoes, and brussels sprouts, made an insane wedding to-do list that could not be more clear and/or specific, ate some sour skittles, drank some rosé, and indulged in too many episodes of Desperate Housewives and Bachelor in Paradise. It was just the little mini-reset I needed.

I was determined to wake up yesterday morning with a good attitude, and would you look at the quote on my ginger tea bag I got:

Isn’t it funny how some things pop up just when you need them? That has been my exact problem through this whole wedding planning process – worrying too much about what others will think of what I am doing and forgetting about the whole meaning of what getting married is. And it’s a really delicate, difficult balance to play around with. Because of course we want our guests to have an amazing evening and to feel loved and welcomed – that’s why we are inviting them! But Chris and I have to remember that it is our wedding, the start to the rest of our lives, and our happiness is really important, too. So thanks Yogi Tea for your important little message.

The rest of Wednesday flew by pretty smoothly, and it ended with a dinner date with my dad. Our birthdays are only a week apart, so we usually try to do something special together to celebrate each year. It’s also so hard to find a good gift for my dad, so taking him out to dinner is the perfect solution. We went to a new favorite of mine, Testa Barra, and it was his first time trying it out. I am so happy he loved it!

We started out our meal with their cocktail of the day – “The Paloma.” If I remember correctly, all it had was their own brand of tequila, simple syrup, lime juice, and grapefruit juice, garnished with a slice of grapefruit. It was delicious. We also had some of their homemade bread with three different kind of spreads – a beet/feta one, a garlic/butter one, and a ricotta/basil one. So good. I ate like, a thousand little pieces of bread I think.

For my entrée, I got the same dish I got the first time I went there – a ravioli/ricotta/chicken/delicious sauce thing. We are actually trying to recreate something similar to this for our wedding, so I wanted to taste it again and make sure I still liked it as much as I did the first time. I also really needed to get a good picture of it to show our caterer….haha. And I swear – the picture doesn’t do it justice. This is one of the tastiest dishes I have ever had in a restaurant.

I loved getting to spend some one-on-one time with my dad last night. With having three younger sisters, it’s near impossible to get alone time with either of my parents, so I really appreciate it when it comes around.

Another random little thing that has been making me smile this week is our cats. Sometimes they drive me insane, but other times they are just the best. Chris snapchatted me this picture yesterday, and it made me laugh so hard. We always joke about our favorite cat and the “outcast” cat (we really love them all – I swear), and this picture outlined perfectly everything we always talk about.

__________

The point of writing this post out for me was to really understand that the little surprises and things in life are usually what calm me down the most and make me the happiest. Chris’s goody bag for me, the message on the tea bag, dinner with my dad, and the cats are really nothing out of the ordinary, but they all came to me this week at the most perfect time and I am so appreciative for that.

Although the big things in life are crazy important, at least for me it’s the little things that tend to keep me going on a day-to-day basis. I love having fresh flowers in the house. I love that my fiancé knows me so well that he knows exactly what I need/want after a hard day. I love my dad and the fact that we can talk for two hours without stopping. I love that I have three sweet cats that are always there to cuddle with me. And I especially love the fact that I have been blessed with all of this and much more.

So now that I’m done rambling, I would love to hear what little thing came into your life unexpectedly this week that changed your perspective! Sometimes they are hard to notice in the moment, but when I go back and look, they are always there.
