I suppose you could say we had a pretty good weekend……
On Thursday night, Chris and I went out to eat at our first date spot called Ottava Via in downtown Detroit. We sat just about where we sat the first time and ordered super similar, too. We talked about how when we barely knew each other and were still trying to be really polite and neat, neither of us made nearly as big of a deal about the sugar-roasted carrots with mashed cauliflower as we should have – but we sure did this time. Usually I say, “You can have the last one babe,” but not here. They were too good. We also split a margherita pizza and a spicy penne dish with broccolini, roasted tomatoes, and some other good stuff.
When we got home from dinner, we put our pajamas on, poured some champagne, and settled down on the couch to watch Shameless, and then Chris proposed! We are so, so happy. It’s probably what everybody says, but I really have never felt luckier in my life. It continuously blows my mind every day that someone like him, whom I think the absolute world of, wants to spend his entire life with me. I really can’t believe it, but I know that I get to now. It’s such an odd, yet phenomenal feeling.
After we celebrated together for a bit, we headed to my parents house to let them (well technically just my mom because Chris had already had a beer with my dad the night prior to talk to him about it) and my sisters know. They were super excited, and we sat in their kitchen and ate cookies and laughed for a while. We took this picture when we got home – we were a mess and so tired, but I love it because of how big our smiles are. I’ll always remember this picture.
On Friday morning we got to sleep in a little bit and then went to the gym to get a quick workout in before heading up north for the weekend. The drive was about 2.5 hours, and once we got there we unpacked and headed into the little town to get some drinks and dinner. We tend to always go to this good little bar, and it totally helped that it was Cinco de Mayo and they had Coronas and margaritas on special.
One of the things that I love the most about being up north is waking up naturally to the sun rising over the water. It is absolutely gorgeous up there, and I am so looking forward to spending more time there this summer when I can actually sit out on that swing in the mornings and drink my coffee.
We lounged around the whole morning, drinking coffee and eating eggs, and eventually made our way to the gym for a workout. For it being a small town, they sure do have a great gym. They have a whole room that just has a ton of fun equipment in it – punching bags, kettlebells, rings, TRX, tires, jump ropes, literally anything and everything you could ever want to use to exercise. I did a mixture of cardio, upper body, and a circuit incorporating kettlebells and boxes.
And again after that, our day was so, so lazy. It was wonderful and just what we needed. We ate lunch and watched an obscene amount of Shameless, laid out on the porch in the sun and read for a while, and drank some more champagne.
I finished Present Over Perfect and loved every word of it. I actually loved it so much that I was tempted to start it over again right then and there. And although it was kind of chilly, the sun was out and directly on us, and it felt like the middle of summer – so I could have sat out there all day long.
Eventually we made our way back into the house and I got to work on making dinner for us. We decided on pasta with homemade turkey marinara sauce and garlic bread. The prep was actually really easy – mainly just chopping up a bunch of onion and a ton of garlic.
Dinner turned out great and then, you guessed it…… more Shameless. We are obsessed. Going up north could not have come in better timing. It was wonderful to get away just the two of us in the quiet for a few days. I know that a lot of really overwhelming things are coming up, so it’s good to know that we have a place to escape to when we need it.
Sunday morning began the exact same way Saturday did, and eventually we packed up our stuff and headed home. It was nice to get home in time to put everything away, do the laundry, clean the house, go grocery shopping, and pack lunches before heading over to my parents house for dinner.
My friend Erica is still in town from Florida, so she came over for dinner, too. We ate and watched old home movies for a bit and then headed home to drink some ginger tea and get to bed early. I was exhausted, but not quite ready to go to sleep, simply because I didn’t want the weekend to end and the real week to start.
I really loved the quote on the yogi tea bag I grabbed. It was just what I needed to hear.
I can imagine this is going to be quite a week coming up, and I am so thankful that we were able to have a slow, chill weekend before it starts. I am so happy and feel so blessed to have Chris in my life and absolutely cannot wait for the rest of our lives together to start. Although change is scary sometimes, this is a chapter of my life that I have zero reservations about and am beyond excited to experience with him.
Best part of your weekend??
