A Long Weekend Away in Saugatuck

Good morning! Although I am not even 1% happy to be back at work today, the plus side is that this week starts on Tuesday, making us one day closer to the weekend. Chris and I had the best couple of days away, just the two of us, in an adorable little artsy town on the west side of Michigan called Saugatuck. I’ve been there a handful of times before with my family, but he had never been, and it was really fun to show him around to all the places I love and find some new ones in the process.

We left on Friday afternoon after a morning workout and made it the whole 2.5 hour drive without stopping, which is pretty much unheard of for me. Since we couldn’t check into our rental apartment until 5pm, we stopped at New Holland Brewery for a late lunch and to have some beer sampler trays. The weather was gorgeous, so we got a table outside on the back patio in their beer garden. After that we headed to downtown Saugatuck to check into our apartment and were so pleasantly surprised when we saw how cute it was!

The location was perfect and about as close to the water as you can get. We were also very pleasantly surprised at the sweet welcome basket that was waiting for us – two bottles of wine, kale artichoke dip, balsamic cheese, flatbread rosemary crackers, coffee, and salted caramel chocolate truffles. A great way to start off our little vacation!

Once we settled into our place, we headed out on a long walk to explore the town and find something to eat. After wandering in and out of a couple stores, we got an outdoor table at a local bar and ordered some beer and wine while we decided what we wanted to do with the rest of the evening. I vaguely remembered that in our landlord’s list of places to go to she mentioned an appetizer/wine bar that we set off to find. I’m not even exaggerating when I say that I think Borrowed Time may have been one of my favorite spots I’ve ever been to. It is a little wine/coffee/small plates/dessert bar made out of an old house with a huge yard full of games, eclectic chairs and couches, and a live band on the night we were there. We ordered a charcuterie board and some bruschetta to split, and I got a glass of rosé and Chris got some of their specialty beer on tap that night.

We sat outside and listened to the music until it started to rain and eventually made our way back to our place and called it a night.

Saturday morning began with Chris bringing me breakfast in bed – amazing cinnamon rolls from a local bakery and some delicious coffee. The best way to start the day!

Since we had a full kitchen in our place, we decided to go to the farmers market to get some fresh produce to make dinner in one night. We got a bunch of vegetables and some awesome cheesy onion bread, went for another long walk around the town of South Haven, and then stopped at Saugatuck Brewery on our way back for some parmesan fries, brussels sprouts, and a beer for Chris and a mimosa for me. We could not have been luckier with the weather this weekend. I think we ate almost every single meal outside.

Saturday afternoon was spent sitting on our patio with a delicious snack plate Chris made us and some white wine while we read, started watching the new season of Bloodline, and played Rummikub. We really had a great spot for people watching and got to see boats go by all weekend, too.

Chris was sweet enough to make us big salads, asparagus, and our farmer’s market bread for dinner, and we went to bed really early after a long day outside.

Sunday morning started out with a run and long walk around the town. It felt so good to move and sweat after a couple days of really indulging in delicious food and drinks. After we cleaned up, we walked back to a cute little dinner for breakfast called Grow that we had passed earlier on our run. Then we went for another long walk (surprise, surprise) down by the water and ended up on a park bench reading books and watching the boats go by for a few hours.

Our afternoon was spent in a very similar way to how the morning was, except with a change of scenery. We headed back to our patio since it got a little chilly and it looked like it was going to rain, but we were actually kind of happy for a break from the sun for a little while.

We had gotten a few recommendations to go to an Italian restaurant for dinner that was only one block away from where we were staying, so we put our name on the wait list and eventually got a table. The food was absolutely delicious – between the two of us we got a couple glasses of red wine, a house salad, some bread, spaghetti, and a seafood linguine dish. We were exhausted again after a long, fun day outside and called it an early night again.

Although we were sad to get up and leave on Monday morning, it was nice to get home unpack, do some laundry, and catch up on life. We also had time to lay out in the sun yesterday, watch some Shameless, and then I headed to my friend Clare’s house to watch The Bachelorette.

The weekend was just fantastic. I am so thankful for the quiet time away with Chris for the two of us to just be and have a nice break from wedding planning. I have a feeling we are going to need a lot more of these weekends away in the next couple of months.

I hope you all had a great weekend!

What did you do over the weekend?
